Enable Telnet Using the Command Prompt in Windows 7


In Windows 7, Telnet Client and Telnet Server is not active for the default setting. However, Telnet Client and Telnet Server can be activated through commands typed at the Command Prompt (CMD).

Open a command prompt via the start button and type CMD
type the following command:
pkgmgr / iu: "TelnetClient" (to enable the Telnet Client)
pkgmgr / iu: "TelnetServer" (To enable Telnet Server)



  • A second way to enable the Telnet Client and Telnet Server in Windows 7
  • Click on the start button and type appwiz.cpl in the search box. Click Turn Windows features On or Off from the right panel Find Telnet Telnet Server and Client, then check the box next to it. Click OK and restart the computer if necessary
